About Spanish Literacy Services

My name is Estela Mérida Godfrey. I was born and raised in Guatemala City. I am an educator with more than 25 years of teaching experience in Guatemala and El Salvador. I understand the cultural and educational background that many of the newcomer families are coming from.

I currently work at a public school in San Rafael, California that serves a high percentage of Hispanic students with love and dedication. However, daily I see how our illiterate newcomer children and teenagers are struggling in school while their parents are also struggling when trying to find better opportunities for employment, health benefits, and other essential needs and services in order to live a decent life in this country.

Not being able to read and write is like walking blind in the middle of a crowded city. It’s heartbreaking to see how much these people have struggled since they left their home countries, mainly from Central America and Mexico.

I’m looking forward to teaming up and building partnerships with local school districts and community organizations interested in helping illiterate newcomers and people that want to learn to read and write in Spanish, learn basic Arithmetic, and learn the basic skills necessary to begin learning English in order to have better opportunities and eventually succeed in their new home, the USA.
